Literacy and Numeracy are two of the keystone skills that enable one to unlock the doors to lifelong learning. Those skills begin developing from an early age but we recognize that circumstances often contribute to students not achieving the foundations needed to be successful in higher education. It is for this reason that spend a portion of the GRADE 10 year working toward ensuring that our students can read, write and have a number sense that sets them up for sucess in high school level learning. These skills are vital to being able to engage in the rigour that high school courses call for.
Everyone enrolling in our GRADE 10 program will spend the first semester in "Learning Strategies 15," Part of this course will be to do an assessment of literacy and numeracy skills and develop some strategies to help close any gaps. For students who are at grade level in these areas, their time in LS 15 will be spent working on developing good learning habits that will serve them well throughout coursework in high school. Every student will establish a profile on myblueprint.ca and begin to craft learning plans and explore career options . This will serve as the foundation for their course selection and making sure they take all the pre-requisites that will allow them to purse post secondary options compatible with their plans.
Credits are obtained in CORE and OPTION COURSES
Courses offered at OPK in Grades 10,11, and 12 all count toward high school graduation. Students may end up completing more than the required credits during their time in high school as they are encouraged to explore a variety of options.
English Language Arts (15 credits): Must include English Language Arts 30-1 or 30-2.
Social Studies (15 credits): Must include Social Studies 30-1 or 30-2.
Mathematics (10 credits): Must include a 20-level Mathematics course (e.g., Math 20-1, Math 20-2).
Science (10 credits): Must include a 20-level Science course (e.g., Science 20, Biology 20, Chemistry 20).
Physical Education 10 (3 credits)
Career and Life Management (CALM) (3 credits)
The majority of courses consist of three levels, and many have multiple
"STREAMS" that reflect the course content and rigour studied. These streams represent different pathways toward obtaining graducation requirements
For Example - English Language Arts has 2 pathways.
10-1, 20-1 & 30-1 : This pathway is generally chosen by students who are planning on pursuing university or similar post-secondary options. The emphasis in this stream is to develop literacy analysis and deep critical thinking skills along with strong and comprehensive communication skills required in university-level courses.
10-2, 20-2 & 30-2 : This pathway prepares students for post-secondary options that don't have the same academic requirements as university programs. The emphasis in this stream is to develop communication skills through practical, creative and persuasive writing.
NOTE all streams require you to take courses in SEQUENCE 10,20 and 30 Level. It is important to note that high school pathways are flexible and you don't need to take courses that correspond to your GRADE level. For example, this means that a GRADE 10 student may take 10 and 20 or even a 30-level course in their grade 10 year. It's important to plan carefully as all 30-level courses require some prerequisite course!
Depending on the courses there are ways students can "cross streams" - for example, you might begin in the -1 stream with English 10-1 and determine that the -2 stream is better suited for learning - you can cross over to 20-2 and carry on in the -2 stream!
